Kurtis Stewart

Alright,

This was my first wedding working with the wonderful Christie Graham. It’s always great to have two people capturing a wedding as there are some moments that are great to have two angle of as well you can spread out through the event for two great perspectives on your special day. You can see some of the images I captured below.

Alright,

I was asked to come and shoot a guest talk by some Pixar Canada employees at the Vancouver Film School. One of the best things about my job has to be the access I get to events in Vancouver, I just have to watch them from behind one of my cameras. You can see my shots from the talk below:

My favorite shot has to be of the student drawing portraits of all the speakers, VFS has some VERY talented artists!

Alright,

I was recently asked to assist on shoot that Emily Pledge had lined up at Al Porto in Gastown. It was a retirement dinner for a local Judge (…if Judges can be considered local..) and she was asked to get a group shot of all the attendees. We arrived before all the guests to setup and test the lighting of the most epic background I’ve been involved with to date…

…that way once the guest of honor had arrived we could just pop in, throw all the lights up real quick, get Emily the frames she needed and then be out so they could enjoy the rest of their night. Once everyone had arrived it went off wonderfully and we were able to get all the images they needed to memorialize this moment. Look forward to working with Emily again in the future!

Alright,

So I recently attended Late Nite Art and of course brought my camera along. The basic layout of the night is combine an up and coming chef, artist, DJ, facilitator/MC and a whole bunch of art supplies.

  • Chef serves up delicious food all night
  • Artist gives a quick talk on their work/process. In this case it was the very talented illustrator Ola Volla
  • MC gives you a creative thread to pull at to make some cool art (ie: “Draw with your eyes closed”, “What’s what most important gift you turned down?”)
  • DJ spins sweet turns while you’re making said art

I’m a self professed stick figure artist so this was a nice creative kick in the pants to just fail away on paper. I’d love to do it again sometime soon! You should definitely stay tuned for the next one via the Late Nite Art Facebook Page (or just to see some VERY flattering pictures of me). Some of my images from the night below:

Alright,

I was recently asked by Jason Ryant to put a Tugboat into one of his images for a new client. It was a really fun project to collaborate on as you’re faking something vs. the regular headshot retouching I do. It’s always a little hard to tell when you’re “done” an image like this but you get there eventually.

Alright,

I’ve recently started working with the very talented Christie Graham of Christie Graham Photography (definitely check out her portfolio!). I was lucky enough to be able to cover a wedding for her and capture Patricia and Mike Maughan’s ceremony that was held at the Shaughnessy Restaurant.

Alright,

I was lucky enough to do a portrait for Tina Kulic a fellow photographer/friend/ex-boss/alumni from the Langara Professional Photo-Imaging Program. It’s always a little more nerve wracking taking a portrait of another photographer, especially one as talented as Tina. We started off nice and light with some great sandwiches at Meat and Bread then wandered our way through Chinatown back to her studio.

Alright, I recently attended a presentation by Kristina Sherk for Photoshelter. A couple points I wrote down from this webinar are:

  • Started working for John Harrington in Washington DC
  • Use Color Range to create an action selection that can work across a large batch of images
  • Go 70% of the way with an effect and then stop (no one has white teeth/iris’s, nobody)
  • The best way to get a client for life is to hire a good retoucher

It’s always interesting to watch someone doing a task you do on a regular basis and see the different ways that they approach it. This should definitely speed up my workflow and allow me to spend more time creating images vs. retouching them! You can see a replay of the video here.

Alright,

This shoot was organized and taught by Chris Morris. It was held at Grouse Mountain and we couldn’t have asked for more beautiful weather! I was stationed on the spot pictured below and could not have been more pleased with my location. We rigged up some lighting gear right underneath one of the jumps and the students shot some very brave skiers/boarders. I can’t even imagine thinking going off one of these 30′ jumps is a good idea and the tricks they pulled off were just ridiculous.

A huge thanks to Devin Manky Photography for hooking us up with some amazing access to the mountain as well as the use of some of the Snowcat’s to get around with all of our gear.

Alright,

I was asked by Langara to attend the North Shore Photographic Challenge held at the Kay Meek Centre to talk to people about what the Langara CS Photography Program has to offer them. As I was helping run the table with some co-workers it always surprised me how small the photo world is, I ran into an old supervisor and ex-student in about a 5 minute span.
