Alright,

I was invited to a performance called “Debut” at the Knockdown Centre by the very talented Hannah Epperson. I still can’t explain it better than they did on the site so here’s the breakdown;

“Debut” is a new evening-length production set in the sprawling 60,000-square-foot space of the Knockdown Center in Queens, NYC, and premieres on October 7 – 9.

Following the success of “The Wilder Papers” at the same space earlier in 2014, Emily Terndrup (Sleep No More) and Derrick Belcham (La Blogotheque) have developed their most ambitious project to date, “Debut”, merging independent music, contemporary dance theater and large-scale art installations.

Performed live by emerging artists in contemporary dance, independent music, large-scale installation and film, “Debut” is an expansive evening of divergent and evolving paths through an experiential narrative, and tells the story of a group of teenagers who break into an abandoned building on the evening of their senior prom.

Throughout the evening, the music, lighting, costume and set design will actively evolve to reflect the shifting perspectives of the characters and audience.

“Debut” features music written and performed live by Julianna Barwick, Mauro Remiddi (Porcelain Raft), Ruby Kato Attwood and John Ancheta (Yamantaka // Sonic Titan), David Moore (Bing & Ruth), Jessie Stein (The Luyas), Hannah Epperson, Taraka Larson (Prince Rama) and Reed Smidebush (Muuny).

It was probably the most interesting performance that I’ve seen because of the fact you had to chase the dancers around this huge venue, you couldn’t see it all as a couple of the pieces happened at the same time at opposite ends of the venue. It was probably the most involved in a theater production that I’ve ever felt. The turnout on the last night when I went was the largest they had so it kind of turned into “capitalist theater” with everyone rushing/guessing where the next number will take place.
