Personal – New York City Day 9

Alright,

The adventure of the day was taking the Staten Island ferry to see the Statue of Liberty. Took a couple trains downtown, nice thing is the stations were connected by these long underground hallways, probably a bonus in the freezing east coast winter.

Actually a really nice ferry terminal, most of the subway stations are from decades ago but this station seems like it was refurbished recently.

Interior of the ferry terminal, just prior to this I was searched by a wonderful Labrador Retriever. Apparently the Station was under MARSEC Level 1 (MARitime SECurity) which according to Wikipedia means “Level 1 – minimum appropriate security measures shall be maintained at all times.”. Apparently I’m a rough and tumble looking Canadian.

Packing the boat to the gills.

Bye Manhattan, I’ll be right back. Don’t run out of pizza!

This is how far away we started from the Statue, a tiny speck on the horizon.

Now there she is in all her glory.

If you ever take the ferry I recommend leaving from the bottom deck. It’s pretty much all locals and you don’t get crushed in the unnecessary race off the boat. Everything’s a race over here, except if you’re on an escalator, then you have to stand stock still in the middle and put your elbows out so no one can pass you…

Note the suckers above me still bumper-car-ing off the boat.

Walked around New Brighton right above the Ferry Terminal on Staten Island. I just liked the plate on this car.

Finally found some houses vs. apartment buildings.

Plows for the coming winter, hopefully I’m out of here before the first snowflake hits the ground.

Completely deserted bridge at Silver Lake Park.

Horizon to Horizon Panorama test, turned out surprisingly well .

In other news, the reign of not taking a subway the wrong way CONTINUES!

Personal – New York City Day 8

Alright,

It’s offically been a week, I still have both kidneys and I have not taken a subway the wrong direction. Currently winning over here folks.

Today’s adventure started at my new home stop of Jefferson St. on the L Train.

I than made my way to the B+H Photo mothership store.

Good.

Lord.

Yes.

For those that don’t know this is like Santa’s workshop for Photographers. Literally walked in, stood there in the doorway until a sales associate asked if I was “okay”. I was speechless. I’m pretty sure they have more staff in that store than the entire schlock of BC camera stores combined. Crazy.

Just your average NYC parking lot, all about the density over here.

Next stop Central Park, which is HUGE by the way. I walked through it for an hour and only got a 1/3 of the way through (those of you who’ve walked with me can appreciate how far this is as I move at a pretty good clip).

This would just make Gord Hauka jealous, couldn’t even fit them all in my frame!

kurtis_stewart_central_park_prospect_park

Huge freaking lake in the middle of the city.

kurtis_stewart_central_park_prospect_park

Finally found some frisbee to play in Prospect Park, didn’t bring my kit so jean shorts and sneakers it was… In my defence I mad two huge sky D’s and a hip high foot block on some unsuspecting schmo. Wednesday’s at 5pm and Sunday’s at 2pm you’ll find me here again.

Central Park and Prospect Park share the same divided roadway plan, lanes for people and bikes going both ways across two traditional car lanes. MUCH more spacious than the seawall.

Personal – New York City Day 7

Alright,

Lack of posts, I know. Been searching for a place to anchor down in all weekend and yesterday I finally moved from Bed Stuy to my new place in Bushwick, Brooklyn. It’s more so the Main/Fraser St area in Vancouver, lots of cool little shops and a young population. Perfect place to spend the next month and a half.

As for today’s adventure, I started off by popping into Shio Studio to say hi to Sophie Kuller, the wonderful studio manager there. The building is very much like 1000 Parker St back in Van. Lots of artist spaces in a 4 storey building.

Afterwards I headed down into Manhattan to check out Madison Square Park. After last weeks 27 degree 76% humidity day, it was great to step out of the subway into a freshly rained on park.

kurtis_stewart__manhattan_madison_square_park

Of course you’re not allowed on the grass, it’s all fenced and just to be looked at…

kurtis_stewart__manhattan_madison_square_park

Right beside the park they had a pop-up eatery setup in between two of the Main St.’s. Lots of cool little shops showing off their culinary skills and serving beer and wine in basically an outdoor cafeteria. I’ll be back!

Last but not least I “hiked” up to the infamous Grand Central Station (anything more than 6 blocks in New York is a cab trip, not walking distance). Grand Central is very busy but with all the space you don’t feel it as much as you do on the sidewalks of New York.
