Langara Photo-Imaging Program – Alumni Emily Pledge Published

Alright,

So this post is a little outside the norm… I was flipping through the pages of “This is East Van” and came across a photo by Emily Pledge, a fellow graduate of the Langara Professional Photo-Imaging Program.

This is East Van, Emily Pledge Published This is East Van, Emily Pledge Published

It was just a really cool feeling to be holding a book in my hands an actually knowing the artist whose work I was looking at. Vancouver is certainly a small world. Congrats to Emily for getting published, can’t wait to see more of your work out there in the world!

Langara Photo-Imaging Program – Photo 1168 with Les Bazso

Alright,

Another post in an effort to digitize all of the work I did in the Langara Professional Photo-Imaging Program. You can see all the previous posts here. In the second semester of the program Photo 1168 focused on Photojournalism, this was my chosen elective for the final term of the course. The assignments in this course were:

  • Photo Story
  • Soundslides Project
  • Environment Portrait
  • News Story
  • Sports Story

Through these assignments I learned how to:

  • Tell a visual story through specific types of images (Long, medium, close up, lead/impact, portrait, interaction, sequence, detail, and closer)
  • Find the key angle/person that the story can revolve around
  • Execute an environmental portrait
  • Write a complete cut line (who, what, where, when, and why)
  • Cover an assignment:
    • understand your audience
    • find out what the story is about and decide how to capture that element visually
    • keep moving
    • include faces
    • shoot right away; then get ready for a better shot
    • look for the decisive moment

This course was great as Les Bazso works for The Province and it was awesome to hear all the stories from recent stories he had been shooting. I love the pressure of Photojournalism and the fact that some things are only going to happen once and you need to be on your toes to capture them. Thanks Les for an awesome semester!

Until the next binder…

Langara Photo-Imaging Program – Photo 2328 with Tomo Tanaka

Alright,

Another post in an effort to digitize all of the work I did in the Langara Professional Photo-Imaging Program. You can see all the previous posts here. In the second semester of the program Photo 2328 focused on practical applications of technical photographic concepts. The assignments in this course were:

  • Color Print Spotting
  • Exposing Color Films
  • Color Ring Around
  • Digital Camera Shoot Out
  • Sharpening Ring Around
  • Hi-Speed/ Spot Strobe
  • ICC Profile
  • Scientific Free Choice
  • “The Moment it Clicks”
  • Christmas Family Portraits
  • Library Interior
  • Bridgestone Tire Contest
  • Lab Supervisor

My favorite assignment of these had to be the library interior as I shot those on 120 slide film, if you haven’t seen a 120 slide before…it’s glorious. Most of these assignments were an extension of all the skills I had learned in previous courses, so for the sake of brevity I won’t re-list them. You’re welcome to read all the previous courses here.

Until the next binder…
