Alright,

Today was another walk/travel heavy day. Gotta schtap that, tomorrow I’ll take a break… said the man with 8 jobs…

Anyhow, this is where things started today Kosciuszko Station right by my place in Brooklyn (no, no, I don’t know how to pronounce it either).

I then walked over to the 9/11 memorial. It was kind of hard to get a scale of things having never been to New York before but this is where the towers used to be.

Yes, New York has some crazies too. The oddest thing though is the police equipment, check out the scissor lift tower thing in the background. The Google search for those interested.

Right behind crazy magoo above we had a mormon (I’m guessing) choir. NEW YORK BABY!

Cool Architectural detail to reduce (guessing again) air conditioning/cooling costs in the summer. It was 27 degrees and 75% humidity today, yup!

Street art. Enough said. Perhaps this artist was inspired by my lack of housing situation on Monday… I’ll deal with that tomorrow.

The Highline, it was my top of list item when I came to New York and I got there on day two. For those of you who don’t know it’s a converted subway track that is now a greenway. Cool. As. F***.

Yes, I assume children read this blog. KEEPING IT CLEAN FOR THE KIDS PEOPLE.

1. Tons of traffic
2. A sidewalk is closed
3. Something is under construction
4. There is brick
5. A taxi is being… dutch (for the kids)

For lunch I could not resist a BBQ place called the Smokeline on the Highline (full disclaimer, I just wanted to be able to blog that sentence).

Pulled Pork with pickled cucumber and a side of sweet corn. That’s all the food groups, right Mom?

Walking to Times Square now, THIS is what I had imagined NYC to be like. People chock-a-block. The only reason there is that space in the bottom of the frame is beacuse a 6’5″ german wielding a camera is about to inhabit that space.

Times Square, even busier than that street corner. Found some quiet space on this random theatre seating in the middle of it all.

Home again back in Brooklyn, it’s funny how 30 minutes on the M Train can change your landscape in this dense city (victory note, have not gotten on the wrong subway/the one going the wrong way…yet).

Last time I went on a trip was my 3 months of backpacking in Europe (Germany, I miss you and your Käsekrainer!). Now I’m on to my next adventure, 2 months in New York City. I intend to take this time off to work on my portfolio and relax while living in this huge city.

So this is how my first day shook out; landed at 7am EST on the redeye, didn’t sleep a wink so figured exploring was a grand idea. Walked from Bushwick to the Brooklyn Bridge and found this cool little picnic area hiding underneath an on ramp to the bridge.

Found a bridge…! (Note; this was the Manhattan Bridge. Whoops!)

After my nice 4 mile jaunt (…it looked closer on Google Maps…) I figured my first meal should be some famous NY Pizza at Grimaldi’s. When I ordered a Root Beer and they gave me one called “Stewart’s” they had me at hello. The pizza was so good I ate the whole thing. Again, whoops.

Now THIS is the Brooklyn Bridge, Williamsburg is hiding behind it in the distance.

There’s a little seawall by the pier I decided to wander aboot and came across this amazing facility called Pier 2. Vancouver Planner’s take note of how epically awesome this “…five acres of basketball, handball, bocce and shuffleboard courts, over half an acre of play turf, fitness equipment, swing sets and picnic tables.” is. Anyhow I was invited to play handball with some cobra like coordinated people, learned a bit about the game and how my hand is basically a giant mis-aiming canoe paddle. Got the hang of the the whole ambi-dexterity thing by the end of it.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Handball helped me pass the time until Golden hour where I banged off this complete beauty. Book worthy? I think so!

The one thing that surprised my on my way home is how people just throw their trash out on the sidewalks for garbage day, no bins. Odd.

 

Anyhow that’s Day 1 in a nutshell. Tomorrow I’m going to be heading into Manhattan for the 9/11 memorial and a couple other places. Stay tuned!
